The project

Arthritis

Context : Arthritis touches one in two people. It destroys the cartilage in the joints, causing pain and serious disability
Aim: To gather all the information needed to launch therapeutic testing aimed at slowing down the destruction of cartilage
 Cost: CHF 291'800.-

Medical genetics

Context: Many mental disabilities remain unexplained because of the limitations of current methods of chromosomal analysis. A new technology, called "CHG-Microarray" helps to resolve this problem
Aim: To identify the gene(s) responsible, and to understand the diseases' mechanisms, so as to allow the screening and treatment of these disabilities.
 Cost: CHF 120'000.-

Osteoporosis

Context: Half of all +65 year-olds suffer from Osteoporosis. The desease causes the weakened skeleton to break spontaneously, severely reducing the quality of life and the autonomy of sufferers
Aim: To identify risk factors so as to prevent osteoporosis and its complications
 Cost: CHF 600'000.-

Psychiatry

Context : Changes in the psychological state of a pregnant woman impact on the development of the fœtus and, subsequently, the infant. Anxiety, for example, provokes the production of stress hormones, which can have an impact, not only on the development of the brain, but also on a child’s genetique heritage.
Aim : To evaluate more precisely this impact, which is presently little understood, by studying pregnant women before amniocentesis. The study will examine the mothers-to-be and their foetuses, and subsequently track their babies and infants up to 2 years of age.
 Cost: CHF 630'000.-
